David and the Old Man is a true life story about a father and his oldest son. The father is a rugged, independent, stubborn and self-serving man who grew up on a farm where growing food became the only way to survive. He carries this farm mentality into his own family situation and has an enormous garden which primarily provides for his wife and four children. He grows and stores enough food for his family, all the neighbors and friends. Beyond his own belief, the Old Man’s first son is not the rugged individualist he pictured his first son to be.

David and the Old Man is one family’s story about a brother who suffers from anorexia nervosa, and how this disease had an impact on the rest of his family from the late 50s through the present. As the title suggests, this is a story about one son, David – also the author’s brother – and his father. David’s anorexia simply dominates everything this family does for almost 40 years, and the relationship between David and his father basically sucks the oxygen out of the room when both are present. Neither father nor son understood the psychology or physiology of the disease, and so both son and father used the same tool – their stubborn nature – to create a life of anger and despair for both themselves and the rest of their family.

WILLIAM ZEMBA

I live with my wife and three children in Santa Clarita Valley, California. We love to go boating, camping, fishing and travel together as often as possible. Spending time with my family is top priority and all of us being outdoor enthusiasts creates a lot of fun. I run a small contracting business here with my wife’s help and we have been able to make a decent living for ourselves. For myself, I especially enjoy long range saltwater sport fishing out of San Diego, California and driving with Marilyn (my wife) in her restored 1957 Ford Ranchero.
